My earliest known ancestor in my paternal line is the above Alexander Harrower. His date of birth is a guess, but Lancaster County, VA court records report his death in 1740.
He and Martha (maiden name unknown) had two children that we know of: Merryman and Charles. Charles and his first wife Elizabeth were my 4th great grandparents.
Alexander first appears in said Lancaster County when pleading for his freedom from Richard Chichester, his master. Therefore, it is assumed he was an indentured servant.
Was he our immigrant ancestor? If so, from where did he migrate? These are questions I've haven't been able to answer.
Research on Alexander and Martha in Lancaster County (online and on site with a hired professional genealogist) has been mostly exhausted. My next plan is to explore the surrounding counties. I was planning my first trip to Virginia, BUT, a virus called Covid-19 stopped all that.
I'm hoping someone, somewhere out there who might know something about these ancestors happens upon this blog.
More to follow.....
I attempted an earlier post but am not sure it went thru. My name is Brent and I am also descended from Charles. Are you descended from his son Epaphroditus? Are you the son of Jackson D.?
ReplyDeleteYes, you are correct. My lineage is: Alexander > Charles > Eppaphroditus > Pleasant Moseley > Achilles David > Samuel Jackson > Jackson Dean > me. How are you descended from Charles?
ReplyDeleteMy lineage is Alexander > Charles > Samuel > Walter M > George Mason > Minor S > Park Newton > Clifford L > me.
DeleteI have seen several references of Alexander being the father of Charles but have never noted any type of support. Do you know what documents are available supporting Alexander's paternity of Charles and Merryman?
ReplyDeleteI wasn't sure how to post documents in this thread, so I started a new post. I hope it helps.
ReplyDeleteI have information on your ancestors, but only down to George Mason. I would love to fill in the Minor S line with any information you may have.
Thanks for the post re: Alexander. I look forward to reviewing those documents more thoroughly. I can provide you with info after George Mason but I have to admit that I did not do the research. Are you familiar with the book ‘Haraway’s in America’? It was compiled by Ronnie Haraway who is also descended from Samuel. He is one of the Alabama Haraways and he has Samuel’s complete line. He also has a large amount of information regarding Eppa’s family. This is how I knew you were from that line and your father‘s name. A lot of Eppa’s information was supplied by Mary Mills who, I believe, is your aunt. The funny thing is that Mary and Ronnie were introduced to each other by my dad. You and I have now come full circle. Anyway, I will send you names of Minor’s family and descendents. We can decide how best to provide you with any dates and other info want. Thanks again for the info on Alexander.
ReplyDeleteYes, I do have Ronnie Haraway's book. I just hadn't gotten it out in awhile. Now I see your line. He shows your great grandfather as "Minor B.". I'm guessing that's a typo and it should be "Minor S."?
ReplyDeleteAny info you've got I would love to see. I just don't know how to go about sharing stuff privately over this blog.
And yes, Aunt Mary Lee did a lot of research on the Eppa descendants. She passed in 2015.
I'll see if I can figure out your email address.
I don’t have any info regarding Minor’s middle initial. His tombstone, of course, has no initial at all.
